Ready, Set, LEAP: Advanced Healthcare Improvement Training with Virginia Mason Institute

Healthcare professionals can now join a cohort for our latest module: Advanced Healthcare Improvement Training (AHIT). This program is intentionally designed for healthcare professionals, and rooted in the LEAP model. LEAP (Learn, Experience, Apply, Perform) emphasizes experiential learning and hands-on training, allowing participants to engage deeply with the material and develop a deep understanding of the concepts. The Advanced Healthcare Improvement Training (AHIT) is a two-phased program that takes place over the course of 16 weeks. Cohort members will apply their learnings to a process improvement project for selected engagement value streams. This advanced training will culminate in each participant demonstrating their ability to “teach back” their learnings – this prepares them to teach and coach others within your organization.

Course Format & Delivery Model

AHIT is delivered over two phases through a hybrid delivery model. Computer-based on-demand learning modules allow participants to move at their own pace, and are supported with live virtual coaching and support. The program functions on a cohort model, and cohorts may be anywhere from 10-30 people. Each participant should expect approximately 84 hours of learning time. 

Target Candidates 

This program is designed for champions that may lead improvement activities, such as Improvement Teams, Improvement Team Leadership, and Quality and Project Team Members. 

Course Topics

During phase 1, training modules include Foundational Principles, Diagnosing the Current State, Integrated Process Analysis, Root Cause Analysis, Understanding Patient and Care Team

Experience, Studying Time, Mapping Value, Analyzing Operator Work, and Communicating Current State Learnings. During phase 2, we focus on a process improvement project, and modules will cover Using 5S to Tackle Waste, Set-up Reduction to Support Flow, Just In Time Production, Mistake-Proofing, Leading Improvements in Your Area, and Case Study small group work.

Learning Outcomes

This training is designed for healthcare professionals who need advanced knowledge and application experience to drive and facilitate system- level changes. Outcomes for cohort members include:

• Use of advanced approaches to understanding and facilitating current state challenges
• The importance of time and understanding workflows
• Understanding the work of the team and patient touch points as they experience care
• Using 5S as a countermeasure to waste
• Discussing set-up opportunities with your team
• Learning and applying mistake proofing methods to improve quality and safety
